Peak oil refers to the moment in history when global oil production peaks. After that, the supply
begins to drop and oil will become more expensive and difficult to extract. At the same time, world demand will continue to rise, and the growing gap
between supply and demand will have serious repercussions for our economy, food supply and even geo-political stability. And if we replace oil with coal,
it will hasten global warming. It is vitally important that we begin to transition from a fossil fuel-based society immediately. The Hirsch Report,* prepared in 2005 for the US Department of Energy, states that "viable mitigation options exist on both the supply and demand sides, but to have substantial impact, they must be initiated more than a decade in advance of peaking." We have no time to lose. Atlanta Beyond Oil is dedicated to preparing for a changed energy world. We offer education, information resources, support, and opportunities for community outreach and action. We are small but growing, and invite new participants from all walks of life and political viewpoints. Your questions, ideas and interests are most welcome. We use Meetup, an online networking service, to recruit interested people and send out meeting notices. Registration is free. To register go to http://oilawareness.meetup.com/67. We are part of a larger movement of citizens coming together to address the consequences of oil depletion. There are 40 Meetup groups like ours that meet on the second Wednesday of every month. Similarly, The Relocalization Network* includes 148 local groups that aim to build communities based on the local production of food, energy and goods. You are invited to our next meeting, on the second Wednesday of most months (register at the Meetup site noted above to get monthly updates), at 7:00 pm at the Toco Hills-Avis G. Williams Library, 1282 McConnell Drive, Decatur (off Clairmont Road – directions at http://www.dekalb.public.lib.ga.us/branches/willdir.htm). We hope to see you there!
